“Art is long; Life is short!” is a statement that suggests it takes a long time to develop art skills, even if a person knows that he or she has art talent.
Of course, post-modern thinkers say just the opposite. They tell us to forget talent and just start doing art. “Grab a pencil, pen, paint, junk from your garbage can, whatever, and start creating. So some do just that. They grab junk and start attaching it to a piece of cardboard, and instant art. Create a bunch of these instant artworks and make them big enough and you will soon be a recognized artist. You might even get paid for them. Who knows?
Today, it seems, every student in school, from preschool to graduate school is told that they can be an artist. Just pick your media, from media specifically made for art to gobs of anything, hamburger say, that was never intended for art. And start creating. When you are done, take a cellphone photo of it, put it on the Internet, and instantly you are an artist. What could be simpler. The “hamburger artist.”
Where is this postmodern thinking taking us?
